New research shows that a short-term ketogenic diet can significantly boost weight loss in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
A meta-analytic study by the Malaysian Ministry of Health found that consuming a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for 45 days reduced the hormonal imbalances commonly seen in women with PCOS.
PCOS is a common hormonal disorder in women, characterized by irregular periods, anovulation, high levels of male sex hormones, such as testosterone, and multiple cysts in the ovaries.
The researchers found testosterone levels decreased in these women after following the keto diet.
The study was a meta-analysis of clinical trials in women with PCOS and examining the effects of diet on their reproductive hormones and weight change. The overall analysis included 170 participants.
Following a ketogenic diet is a way to put the body into a metabolic state of ketosis, where fat is burned for energy instead of carbohydrates.
